March 2006 Accessibility Spotlight
March�s spotlight for universal accessibility is the Maple Ridge
Library. The Maple Ridge Library is located at 130-22470 Dewdney Trunk
Road.
The design of the Maple Ridge library takes into account the many
different types of patrons. The library is used for many different
purposes: as a meeting place for organizations and groups, as a study
hall for students, as a place to access the internet or computers, as a
place to take courses, attend events and programs, and of course a
place to relax and enjoy the many reading materials offered.
The Maple Ridge library has two accessible parking spots in the
underground parking. The two parking stalls are well marked by bright
blue designated symbols. The parking is directly next to the elevator
for the library. There is an automatic button to allow for easy
entrance to, or from, the elevator. The elevator is large enough to
comfortably fit a mobility device.

Computers are available on the first and second floor for patrons to
access the library catalogue and internet. The desks for the
computers are set up with wheelchair users in mind, with space
underneath for those with wheelchairs to easily access.

For patrons with visual impairments the library has a large print
computer on the first floor. (image 4) The library also has a
magnifier available for all written material.

The library�s elevator offers easy access to the second floor.
Exiting and entering the elevator can be done with ease due to the open
space design. The library has a clock with large print numbers so
patrons can easily read the time.

The computer lab, located on the second floor, has computers available
for patrons� use. There are several computers which are accessible for
those with wheelchairs. There is space available inside the lab to
place a mobility device, such as a walker or scooter, while using a
computer. (image 9)
There are accessible washrooms on both floors of the library. The
designated accessible washrooms are unlocked by the staff at the
information desk for the safety of all patrons. The washroom has grab
bars for those who need to transfer or for those who have balance
difficulties. (image 10) The washrooms have sinks which people with
wheelchairs are able to roll under. (image 11) There are also
accessible stalls, and sinks, available within the regular washrooms.
The library�s self service checkout has an accessible counter at a
lower level and with room to place one� s legs if in a wheelchair.

The Maple Ridge library creates an environment of inclusion through the
design of the inside of the building, and the helpfulness of the staff.
The library offers materials that assist those with disabilities and
equipment that makes a visit to the library more enjoyable for those
with disabilities or limitations. In addition to the design of the
interior the staff prove that customer service is a very important
component of accessibility.
We at CAN would like to thank those at the Maple Ridge Library for
thinking of all their customers, and for creating a space that is easy
to use no matter what age, level of mobility, disability, or ability.
